UET lecturer fired for fake PhD degree

LAHORE: The University of Engineering and Technology (UET) syndicate on Tuesday dismissed a lecturer of Faisalabad sub-campus for presenting a fake PhD degree.

A two-day meeting of the UET syndicate was organised on the campus on Jan 15 and 16 with Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Syed Mansoor Sarwar in the chair.

The syndicate approved the adoption of Sexual Harassment Act, and the show-cause notice was issued to Deputy Registrar Abid Omer for submitting fake experience certificate, while inquiries were ordered under Punjab Employees Efficiency, Discipline and Accountability (PEEDA) Act against Project Director Narowal sub-campus Usman Majeed and five other teachers for their alleged involvement in corruption.

The syndicate also dismissed Faisalabad (sub-campus) department of geological engineering lecturer Sheikh Ahmad Ali on presenting a fake PhD degree.

The lecturer went for a PhD degree in America under the Faculty Development Programme (FDP) scholarship and on his return had submitted a fake PhD degree from Asian Institute of Technology. He was dismissed after proceedings under PEEDA Act 2006.

The syndicate had transferred more than 250 students of Chenab campus to other affiliated colleges as it was closed for failing to get accreditation.

During the meeting, the syndicate on the recommendation of the selection board approved appointment of a professor, an associate professor, 11 assistant professors and nine lecturers.

Promotions of four officers each on the posts of assistant registrar and administrative officer were also approved.

On the recommendations of the finance and planning committee, the syndicate approved various facilities in the tuition fee of local students and those from Occupied Kashmir and Afghanistan.

The syndicate also accorded approval to reduction of fees for children of overseas Pakistanis, reduced fee for students in Institute of Business and Management (IB&M) and waived off hostel fee for [erstwhile] Fata students.

Furthermore, the syndicate also approved Admission Policy 2021, according to which full marks of FSc will be considered in undergraduate programmes for Fall-2021 admission.

The syndicate also approved time-scale promotion policy as well as regularisation of contractual employees.
