LAHORE: Rank outsider dark-bay colt Breaking Bad provided moment of glory to trainer Tauqir Ahmed when he galloped to victory in the lucrative Makhdumzada Syed Hassan Mahmud Memorial New Year Cup during the Lahore Winter Meeting at the Racecourse here on Saturday.

Breaking Bad surprisingly beat the highly-rated colt Warrior’s Call by two lengths with Royal Solution and bay filly Taksim Square completing the frame among seven starters.

It was a very special moment for the jockey Mohammad Zulfiqar and Tauqir during the 1,200-metre as they gave owner Mazhar Qayyum the chance to receive the cup from the General Manager, Human Resources of Jamal Din Wali (JWD) Group Mohammad Armaghan Aized. The cup race was sponsored by LRC chairman Makhdum Syed Ahmad Mahmud in memory of this father.

The supporting feature event, the Ghazanavi Cup was won by grey filly Haiku, ridden by jockey Tahir Abbas, defeating favourite colt Exceptional One Sparking with finishing third and Your Flame In Me completing the frame among 10 runners.

Favourite bay colt Nayel, ridden by jockey Mohammad Zulfiqar, landed the Golden Drift Cup in a front running style by a short-head from Tahir Abbas-ridden Lorenzo. The luck of Nayel’s owner Mustansar Billah was very evident when the colt won the race by being a sheer fortunate as he was leading right from the start but followed by Lorenzo, who quickened up in an amazing display of speed but finished second.

Midway through the proceedings the race-goers held a minute’s silence and offered fateha for the soul of LRC prominent member Pir Allah Yar Chishty, a former owner who died early this morning after a protracted illness.
