Emulating UAE

THIS refers to the article ‘Different gods’ (Nov 14). The writer has suggested that Pakistanis shall be allowed to choose what they may practise under the garb of ‘freedom of choice’ just like the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has recently given social freedoms to its citizens.

The counter-argument is simple. Two wrongs don’t make a right, do they? If the UAE government has opted to deviate from religious principles, we don’t have to follow its example. This is not a verdict from the clergy, but the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan also puts certain limitations on what the government can and cannot do. It is not just a matter of debate between the liberals and the rightists, but is also a serious matter for all those who believe in the sanctity of the Constitution.
