AN advertisement (Nov 17) placed by the All Pakistan Cement Manufacturers’ Association about monopolistic advantage provided to a single terminal at Port Qasim was quite amusing to those who know a thing or two about the matter.

The cement industry is considered among the longest-running cartels in the country, making massive profits in an incredibly non-competitive manner. The industry has no interest in curbing monopolistic behaviour or promoting the free market unless of course it is hurting its own bottom line.
