Lavish receptions

LAVISH spending on marriages is in vogue these days. The millions spent – wasted, actually – on decorating banquet halls stand a testimony to the scale such spending has reached. This is no more than a vulgar display of wealth.

This kind of spending on marriages gives birth to many a social evil. It creates unnecessary competition and heart-burning among the members of society who have modest financial means. Money is spent beyond capacity and this makes many parents bankrupt. Hard-earned money should never be spent thoughtlessly on vain lavish practices.

It is time families showing off so badly were boycotted. The media can and should raise its voice against this evil. The best line of action is for the couples tying the knot to take a pledge not to be a part of this senseless behaviour.
