BAJAUR: Scores of people blocked Khar-Peshawar road in Lowisam area here on Friday for three hours in protest against the murder of a driver who had been missing since November 8.

The protesters came out on the road hours after body of the local taxi driver, Latifur Rahman, was found along with his vehicle.

They criticised the local police for not making efforts for safe recovery of the driver, adding that his family and relatives had informed the local police after he went missing. However, they claimed that the police even did not register an FIR of the incident.

The protesters added that it was a case of ransom, but the police did not handle it properly.

Local political and social activists, traders and transport union leaders addressed the protest and expressed grave concern over the murder of the missing driver.

They lashed out at the local police for poor law and order situation in the district for the past several months.

According to them, the people were expecting to see a marked improvement in the law and order situation in the region after extension of police system to the area, but that was yet to be witnessed.

The speakers said that a number of murder and targeted killing cases had been reported in the district during last one year.

The protesters ended their protest after a team of police officials assured them of investigations to trace and arrest those involved in the case.

The officials also announced to register a case against unidentified killers.

ANTI-POLIO DRIVE: The district administration and health officials at a meeting in Bajaur tribal district on Friday vowed to make successful the coming anti-polio campaign starting from Nov 30.

The meeting chaired by deputy commissioner Fayyaz Khan reviewed arrangements for the five-day campaign. It was attended by district health officer Dr Adnan and other relevant officials.
