Steps sought for curbing violence against women
LOWER DIR: Civil society representatives here on Wednesday demanded of the government and relevant departments to take practical measures for end to violence against women.
The Ujala Network, a joint body of rights organisation in Lower Dir, also arranged a signature campaign in Timergara for the youth to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women during which hundreds of youth signed a banner inscribed with 26 points of ‘women’s charter of demands’.
Later, speaking at a press conference, Ujala Network leaders Akbar Khan, Ebrash Pasha and others said the government should frame strict laws to curb sexual violence against women and children.
They said that due to increase in sexual abuse cases the government should take practical steps to curb such crimes. They said the government should introduce skill-based education in the mainstream curriculum and demanded establishment of women desks at all police stations and 24/7 nationwide helpline for women complainants.
MAIDAN JIRGA: Members of Maidan Qaumi Jirga led by former MPA Saeed Gul met the newly-posted district police officer Liaquat Ali Malik and additional deputy commissioner Ashfaq Ahmad at their offices here the other day and demanded arrest of the killers of four persons of a family gunned down at Shah Alam Baba area of Adenzai 17 days ago.
Later, speaking at a press conference at Timergara Press Club, the jirga members, including Saeed Gul, Shad Nawaz, PTI’s Ghulam Hussain and others, said four members of a Lajbok Maidan family were killed and three injured when unknown assailants attacked their vehicle in Serai Shah Alam Baba area on Nov 7.
The jirga members said all the victims belonged to the family of one Wahab Gul. They demanded the government to include the family in ‘Shuhada’ package.
Earlier, Liaquat Ali Malik (PSP BPS-19) assumed charge of his office as DPO here. He visited the police lines and SP investigation’s office where he was briefed about the law and order situation in the district.
