SWABI: Two unidentified robbers shot dead a money changer on resistance before depriving him of Rs5 million in the main bazaar of Topi tehsil here on Tuesday, the police said.

The deceased, Kamran Khan, hailed from Chota Lahor city.

The police said the money changer was on way to his shop from Chota Lahor, but when he entered the market near Batakara Road two unidentified persons approached him and tried to snatch a briefcase from him. When the businessman put up resistance they opened fire, leaving him seriously injured.

The traders immediately shifted him to the tehsil headquarters hospital where he succumbed to injuries.

The traders suspected that the assailants might have been backed by some accomplices. They recalled that jewellery shops were also looted by men in police uniform in May 2018 in Topi main market, but none of them could be arrested till date.

When contacted, DPO Imran Shahid told Dawn that the preliminary investigations revealed that there were two assailants.

DSP Topi Iftikhar Ali Khan said that about Rs5 million were snatched from the money changer, adding whereabouts of the attackers were not yet known. “We are investigating the case from different angles,” he added.

An FIR of the incident was registered against unidentified robbers in the Topi city police station.
