Political rebirths

POLITICIANS never seem to die. They only stink of death. Nawaz Sharif’s political rebirth over the last month has been rather astonishing. In self-exile in London, one assumed that his career was over with his party defeated and Imran Khan firmly in power. And yet with a couple of fiery speeches and political mobilisation, he seems to be back in the game.

This rebirth has been made possible by the governance failings of the sitting government, in particular the mismanagement of the economy. This represents a crucial lesson in politics; in the absence of genuine service delivery and reforms, the logical outcome is a political vacuum.
