From The Past Pages Of Dawn: 1970: Fifty Years Ago: Pakistanis in Jordan

RAWALPINDI: The Foreign Office here had not received till tonight [Oct 7] a reply to its query from Pakistan Embassy in Amman regarding a newspaper report that 40 Pakistanis were killed and 14 injured during the recent civil war in Jordan.

The last message received from the Embassy after the fratricidal war had only stated that the members of the Embassy staff and personnel of the Military training mission in Jordan were safe and well. The message had made no mention of Pakistanis, whether with or without passport, who might have been injured or killed during the conflict there. The Foreign Office sources here would not comment on the newspaper report until they have received a reply to their query cabled yesterday. — Correspondent

[Meanwhile, as reported by an agency in D.I. Khan,] Mufti Mahmood, General Secretary, Jamaat-ul Ulema-i-Islam, has urged the Government to ban those political parties who were getting foreign aid. He also appealed to the President to appoint a high-powered commission to investigate the sources of their funds.

Mufti Mahmood addressing a public meeting here recently alleged that Rs. 30 crores were withdrawn by the American Embassy from PL-480 funds since January 1970. The Government should also check the accounts of the said Embassy as was done in Bharat, he added.
