Five cops terminated over custodial death

SHANGLA: District police officer Asif Gohar has terminated five policemen, including a sub-inspector, after an inquiry declared them guilty of causing death of an accused during custody.

Body of Syed Ali Akbar Shah was found in the police lockup on June 19, this year.

A statement issued on Friday said the inquiry committee on the custodial death had completed its investigations and found the police officials, including sub-inspector Nasib Zada, three head constables, Aleemullah, Laeq Mohammad, Attaullah, and constable Altaf Hussain, guilty of killing Syed Ali Akbar Shah charged with keeping hashish, during custody in Karora police lockup, sparking protest demonstrations.

The former district police officer had formed the inquiry committee, which on Friday submitted its report.

PROTEST: Residents of Puran tehsil on Friday staged a protest demonstration in Aloch Bazaar against inflation and excessive power outages.

The protest call was given by local activists. Javid Ali, Dayan Ghafar, Ihsanullah and others spoke to the protesters, saying that the government had forced them to come onto the roads as it had increased prices of wheat flour and medicines manifold.

They asked the government to take steps for bringing down the flour prices to give relief to the poverty-stricken people.

Activist Dayan Ghafar said the Peshawar Electric Power Supply Company had been resorting to excessive and unscheduled loadshedding in the area, causing problems to the consumers.

He said due to power cuts students were unable to prepare for the examinations. He asked the power company to decrease loadshedding hours.

Activist Ihsanullah said increase in rates of lifesaving drugs had troubled the poor.
