PTCL introduces quick optical distribution network

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) has become the first operator in South Asia and the Middle East to introduce a quick optical distribution network (QuickODN), which is free of splicing.

The project has been executed in collaboration with Huawei. QuickODN is expected to increase deployment of fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP), hence, decreasing the amount of time spent on marketing by 30pc.

The pilot project, Symmetric Passive Optical Access Network (XGS-PON) was conducted in Korang Town, Islamabad. XGS-PON has the capacity to provide 10 gigabites (Gbps) of downlink bandwidth and 10Gbps of uplink bandwidth to each customer; this is five times more than the internet speed provided by 5G technology. The network is expected to enhance the quality of service and experience for the user.

Huawei Pakistan Chief Executive Officer Mark Meng said that introduction of XGS-PON technology in Pakistan will allow customers to experience “best-in-class” internet services. This technology will provide fibre-based broadband services to residential homes and businesses at speeds of up to 10Gbps.

Saad Muzaffar Waraich, the group chief technology and information officer at PTCL, said: “Deploying this solution in Pakistan will enhance the overall customer experience, thus enabling them to enjoy hi-speed internet and higher bandwidth.”
