House collapse kills woman, grandson in Swabi

SWABI: A woman and her grandson were killed and six others were injured when roof of their mud house collapsed in the wee hours on Tuesday.

The incident occurred in Palosai village of Parmuli union council.

Naveed Khan, a local who participated in the rescue operation, told Dawn that the roof of the house had been weakened by the recent rains.

Hashmat Bibi, wife of Fazal Mohammad, and her grandson, Abusafan, 4, died on the spot, while Fazal, his four daughters Gul Fam, 25, Madeeha Khan, 12, Khadija Khan, 10, Hadeesa Khan, 8, and grandson Azan Khan, 3, were injured.

The injured were taken to the tehsil headquarters hospital, where Fazal was stated to be in serious condition.

Meanwhile, a man was injured when a loader and a rickshaw collided on Baja Bypass. The injured, Raziq Zaman, was taken to the district headquarters hospital.

In another road accident, a woman and a child were injured when two rickshaws collided near Charbagh on Swabi-Mardan Road.

Also in the day, the district administration stopped the contractors from excavating sand from a nullah in Saleem Khan village after the people had protested when two children drowned in a ditch filled with water in the stream on Monday.

The district administration asked the people that if they noticed any vehicle taking sand from the nullah they should inform the relevant officials who would take prompt action.
