Dual nationals

APROPOS the news ‘PM rejects criticism of dual nationals holding public office’ (Sept 11). No one doubts the fact that overseas Pakistanis are a great asset to the country. And some of the best minds, professionals and entrepreneurs are outside Pakistan.

However, the world is now moving fast towards becoming a global village, and people can work in foreign countries for a prolonged period of time on the basis of just a work permit. So why is it necessary for Pakistanis working abroad to abandon their place of birth and adopt the nationality of a country where they have to take a fresh oath of allegiance and loyalty?

Although there is nothing wrong in going abroad for improving one’s quality of life and nothing wrong in acquiring the nationality of another country, what is worrisome is why people choose to put their feet in two boats? It’s only in our part of the world that people’s highest aim in life is to maintain dual nationality. Is it because of insecurity, or some sort of convoluted mindset?

As regards creating a conducive atmosphere why undermine the talent, and the human resources available locally, why not make conditions favourable for them? After all they too are Pakistani and deserve the same status and opportunities, or do they only qualify for such treatment, once they get a foreign passport.

Furthermore, when the dual nationals are called and given the honour of serving their country of origin in the public sector, why can’t they sacrifice the nationality of the adopted country for the sake of the country which served as a springboard for the opportunity to work abroad? Should we take it to mean their skepticism about Pakistan’s well-being?

Lastly, for how long are we going to continue with the present mindset? And when are we going to change our perception about the ones who do not aspire to get a foreign nationality?
