Why we are sinking

APROPOS the letter ‘Why we are sinking as a nation?’(Sept 3). Inherently we are afflicted with a moral crisis, and all the other crises namely economic, political, social and administrative emanate from our moral crisis.

There is no denying the fact that we talk big and act small. What we plan, we don’t implement. This is so because we have no sense of moral responsibility. Passing the buck has become our national trait and this has led to the mess that is to be seen in every walk of life in society.

During the recent heavy rains the choking of the drainage system in Karachi is not the shortcoming of one municipal department, but the collective failure of many departments collectively which allowed the encroachment upon main drains and hydrological arteries of this megalopolis? Obviously, it is the result of the collective neglect of decades at the local, provincial and federal levels.

Our rulers and planners must keep in mind that even the ambitious Rs 1.1trillion Karachi uplift package will not yield the desired results until and unless all stakeholders act with honesty, sincerity and in a national spirit. In short, all need to display moral uprightness
