From The Past Pages Of Dawn: 1970: Fifty Years Ago: Nur demands ‘White Paper’

LAHORE: Air Marshal (Retired) Nur Khan, a Council Muslim League leader, yesterday [Sept 7] called for the release in the White Paper form of all details pertaining to the 1965 War with India and subsequent signing of cease-fire declaration at Tashkent so that the nation could know the blunders committed by the leaders of the then Government. He was addressing a public meeting held outside the Mochi Gate gardens under the auspices of the City League.

He was extremely critical of giving an initiative to India to launch an attack on Pakistan. … Air Marshal Nur Khan, who had served the country as Commander-in-Chief of the Air Force at the time, said the manner in which the leaders of Pakistan behaved and acted during those days was seriously questionable.

To quote an example, he said, “The enemy is about to attack you. You are standing before him. Both of you are holding guns. The enemy has taken an aim and is about to fire. You have pointed your gun towards the ground and are expecting your enemy to fire first. The only thing you would do then is pray to God Almighty that your enemy’s aim misses the mark.” Exactly the same, he added, was the position of the Pakistan forces at that time. — Agency
