[Meanwhile, as reported by an agency in Dacca,] The President, Gen A.M. Yahya Khan, said that Pakistan’s destiny could be achieved only through the establishment of a fully democratic order. In a message to the nation on Independence Day, the President said that “all our efforts are directed towards that end”.

While reminding the people of their role … “the need of the hour,” he said, “was that all of us should act with moderation, sobriety and mutual forbearance”. “After all, our ultimate objective is the same, namely, the solidarity, integrity and prosperity of Pakistan,” he added.
