From The Past Pages Of Dawn: 1970: Fifty Years Ago: Govt employees held

DACCA: Forty-one Provincial Government Class IV employees were arrested here today [July 8] in connection with their strike which began yesterday to press their 9-point charter of demands in defiance of a Government order prohibiting the strike.

The situation created by the strike in all Government offices, including the Dacca Medical College and Salimullah (Mitford) Medical College Hospital, showed no significant improvement till today except that “certain arrangements” have been made for carrying on normal administrative work, according to a Government spokesman.

But according to the Superintendent of Salimullah Medical College Hospital “marked improvement has taken place with the recruitment of new ward boys and sweepers” and the situation has become “near normal”. Although dry food was supplied today, patients would be given “some cooked food” from tomorrow, he added. Although only acute cases were being admitted, the Outdoor Patients Department worked normally, said the Hospital Superintendent.
