KARACHI: Pakistani exporters are unable to sell the anticipated volume of mangoes to Iran due to short duration of border opening and reduced number of trucks coming from the western neighbour.

Pakistan Fruit and Vegetable Exporters, Importers and Merchants Association Patron-in-Chief Waheed Ahmed said currently the Tafftan border opens thrice a week on alternate days for limited timings and 75 trucks coming from Iran to Pakistan are used for export of mangoes to the Islamic Republic.

These Iranian trucks, he added, are unsuitable as well inadequate for carrying mangoes from Pakistan since they are used to carry LPG, cement and other products.

As of now, around 60 trucks of mangoes are awaiting at the border and with each passing day, this number is being multiplied. These are carrying mangoes worth $800,000 and if not cleared to cross the border to Iran, the exporters will sustain huge financial losses, he said.Published in Dawn, June 10th, 2020
