From The Past Pages Of Dawn: 1970: Fifty Years Ago: Nixon — a ‘Buddha’

HONG KONG: The New China News Agency said yesterday [May 30] US President Richard Nixon was trying to pass himself off as a Buddha to woo the American people. The Agency, commenting on President Nixon’s speech praising his country, said the American people refused to be taken in by the President’s words, but continued to struggle against the Nixon Administration.

“In his speech, Mr Nixon changed his ferocious features all of a sudden and lavished compliments on the US students whom he had vilified as bums,” NCNA said. “Having slain American students and others, Mr Nixon tried to woo the people by flattery. An unmistakable murderer with his hands still dripping with the blood of the people tried to pass himself off as a Buddha.” — Agency

[Meanwhile, as reported by an agency in Kabul,] The Afghanistan Government has appointed a high-power commission to investigate arson and terror acts on Wednesday [May 27] in Jalalabad, capital of the eastern province of Nanagahar.

Reports reaching here said that extremist elements burnt down annexes of the Singhar Hotel before Police intervened.
