RAWALPINDI: Punjab government issued new standard operating procedures (SOPs) for Friday and Eidul Fitr congregations, asking all 36 district administrations, across the province to implement them.

Talking to Dawn, Commissioner retired Capt Mohammad Mehmood said: “Under the new SOPs for Friday and Eidul Fitr congregations, 30 minutes have been allocated for Arabic sermon, namaz and dua; no gathering will be allowed beyond this. Handshakes and hugs are not allowed after the prayers. There will be a ban on entrance for people older than 55 years and children, in mosques on Friday and Eidul Fitr. No carpet is allowed inside the premises of mosques and imambargahs, as floors will be cleaned with chlorinated water, before prayers.”

Teams from district administrations in the Rawalpindi division have been formed to inspect mosques, imambargahs and open spaces, he said, adding that local police have been asked to make a comprehensive plan for security of Friday and Eid Congregations and deploy police force.

“To avoid any untoward situation, the government is alert and in this regard, army and rangers will be on call,” he said, adding, though there was no direct threat.
