Anti-dengue drive launched in Shangla

SHANGLA: The health department on Sunday launched a campaign against dengue in all the 28 union councils of the Shangla district.

“We have taken this initiative on the directives of the provincial health department’s director general to prevent the spread of deadly mosquito-borne disease in the district,” Dr Abdul Samad Khan, focal person for dengue campaign in Shangla, said.

He said over 320 lady health workers had been engaged in the campaign, who were visiting each household in their respective catchment areas to eliminate any places of stagnant water.

Dr Samad said LHWs would inspect water tanks, tyres and domestic pots and would then report to the respective tehsil lady health supervisors if they found dengue larva anywhere.

He said lady health workers would be provided with larvicides which would be thrown on stagnant water across the village and neighbourhood councils to kill larval mosquitoes.

“We expect fewer dengue cases in the district during the current year compared to previous years due to early launch of the campaign,” he added.

SCHOOLS APPROVED: The provincial government has approved establishment of 10 government primary schools and two higher secondary schools in the district.

A notification issued by the education department said 10 schools would also be upgraded, including girls’ primary, middle and high schools.

According to the notification, new primary schools would be built in Dehrai, Bahlol Khel, Butyal, Pir Abad, Koz Kana, Ranial, Bunirwal, Bengalai, Bar Puran and Shang union councils.

SUCCUMBS TO INJURIES: A man, who got critical injuries after he fell from a moving vehicle, succumbed to injuries at a hospital in Islamabad.

Locals said that Swal Rehman, who had a shop in Bisham Bazaar, was returning from market after receiving payments from the vendors, when he fell down from a moving vehicle, and suffered critical injuries. He was shifted to tehsil headquarters hospital, Bisham, in unconscious condition.

They said later he was referred to a hospital in Islamabad where he succumbed to his injuries.

The police have also lodged an FIR and have begun further interrogations into the case.
