From The Past Pages Of Dawn: 1970: Fifty Years Ago: Pakistan shall prevail

RAWALPINDI: President Yahya Khan today [March 22] called upon the people to ponder over the crucial issues facing the nation in the present “most critical period” of the country’s history. In a message to the nation on the occasion of the Pakistan Day, he said: “We must not go down in history as a generation which failed to come to grips with its problems and belied the expectations of the Quaid-i-Azam.”

He expressed his faith in the people and in the ideology and destiny of Pakistan and said he was sure that “we shall soon, by the Grace of Allah be able to overcome the difficulties lying in our way and march ahead”. He also urged the people to make a solemn vow to work harmoniously and incessantly to build Pakistan into a “glorious State”.

The President pointed out that on this day of “great significance”, which marked the turning point in the nation’s struggle for independence 30 years [ago], “our leaders decided to work for the establishment of a separate homeland for the Muslims of the sub-continent where they could live with dignity and honour”. He said the goal set forth in 1940 was achieved in 1947 against heavy odds because the nation rallied round the inspiring leadership of the Quaid-i-Azam and sincerely followed his motto of Unity, Faith and Discipline.
