PAC summons NAB director general

ISLAMABAD: The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) on Thursday summoned the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Director General Irfan Naeem Mangi over ‘stalled’ inquiry in the alleged embezzlement of federal employees’ benevolent fund.

PAC under the chairmanship of Rana Tanvir Hussain examined the audit reports of the Establishment Division.

Audit officials told the committee that out of the Rs22 billion fund, Rs3 billion were invested in a private sector’s security out of which Rs1.2 billion were lost.

Expressing dissatisfaction over NAB’s performance, Mr Hussain said the case had been pending with NAB since 2012 and there is still no progress.

MNA Sardar Ayaz Sadiq criticised the bureau for failure to conclude the probe despite a lapse of eight years.

Senator Mushahid Hussain Syed said that NAB is more active against politicians as it only shows progress in political cases.

Subsequently, the committee summoned the NAB DG to give a briefing about the investigation.

The audit officials also told the committee that the rules of the fund have not been framed so far to which establishment secretary replied that the rules in the official gazette will be notified in three months.
