From The Past Pages Of Dawn: 1970: Fifty Years Ago: President’s Id message

There was no edition of the newspaper on Feb 18, 1970 on account of Id-ul-Azha. The following excerpt is from the previous day’s edition.

RAWALPINDI: The President, General A.M. Yahya Khan, today [Feb 16] appealed to the people to revive within themselves the spirit of the love of Allah and the greater good of the nation. He made the appeal in his message to the nation on the occasion of Id-ul-Azha.

“While offering the sacrifice of an animal, let us all reflect that what Hazrat Ibrahim was sacrificing with his own hands was not an animal but his own beloved son.

“What is important is that we should be willing to part with our dearest possessions for the sake of Allah, that those of us who have wealth should help the destitute and deprived, that those of us who are well-fed should also feed the hungry, that those who live in comparative comfort should help those who are less fortunate.

“Unfortunately today, we are too much in love with ourselves, too engrossed in acquiring rather than giving. ...” — Agency
