From The Past Pages Of Dawn: 1970: Fifty Years Ago: Teachers’ token strike

DACCA: The members of the East Pakistan Teachers’ Association observed a token strike today [Jan 27] throughout the province in response to the call given by the Association for realisation of their seven-point demands.

Mr Kamruzzaman, General Secretary of the East Pakistan Teachers’ Association, on the occasion of the strike, urged the authorities to accede to the demands of the Association. Speaking at a gathering of school teachers at the Baitul Mukarram premises here this afternoon, he remarked that the just demands of the Association were for the benefit of the people of the country at large and not only for the teachers.

He alleged that the authorities had compelled them to come out in the streets which he said was against the self-respect of the teachers as well as the honour attached to the profession. He regretted that everybody talked about their honourable profession but nobody talked of their problems and the solutions thereby. He also appealed to the political leaders to come forward and co-operate with them for realisation of their genuine demands.

After the meeting, the assembled teachers of the city and Narayanganj brought out a procession and paraded through Jinnah Avenue and Nawabpur and dispersed from the Bahadur Shah Park.
