471 unregistered vehicles impounded

RAWALPINDI: Traffic police impounded 364 motorcycles, 66 rickshaws and 41 cars since it launched a crackdown against unregistered vehicles on Jan 15.

The objective of the campaign is to ensure roads are safe and all owners of vehicles paid their due taxes, said the traffic police.

When Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Mohammad Bin Ashraf was asked about the number of such vehicles, he told Dawn that the exact number of unregistered vehicles was not known but they could be in hundreds.

“Unregistered motorcycles are countless,” he added.

He said the city traffic police would continue the crackdown. Getting a vehicle registered is compulsory as there is no provision in law to drive an unregistered vehicle, said the CTO.

In the second phase, traffic police along with Excise and Taxation Department will launch a campaign against fake registration plates because unregistered and fake registration number vehicles are used in majority of crimes.
