Demand for restoration of student unions

HYDERABAD: A group of students calling itself the ‘youth action committee (YAC) has urged the Sindh government to restore students’ unions at educational institutions in the province.

Speaking at a press conference at the local press club on Sunday, Sindhu Nawaz Ghangro, Hamz Ali Chandio, Sohail Bhutto, Saddam Khoso and others demanded legislation to allow student politics at educational institutions and warned that if this was not done within the next three months, they would resume their struggle on roads and educational institutions.

They recalled that in the wake of the YAC’s recent campaign, the Sindh government had made an announcement about restoration of student unions in Sindh.

They said that during their movement, several of those who took part in protest demonstrations and long march were not only arrested but also subjected to enforced disappearance.

The victims got threats of dire consequences but they did not give up their struggle, they said, adding that the government finally came up with an announcement to restore student unions.

They stressed that government should enact a law for the restoration of student unions at colleges and universities.

The activists said the YAC had convened a meeting of different student organisations which decided to give a three-month time to Sindh government to fulfil its promise. “During this period, we will not sit idle, but will keep creating awareness among students,” they said.
