From The Past Pages Of Dawn: 1945: Seventy-five years ago: No ban on “Dawn”

JAMMU: A Press Note says: “The attention of His Highness’ Government has been drawn to certain newspaper reports to the effect that the entry of ‘Dawn’ into Jammu and Kashmir has been banned. No such ban has been imposed. All that has happened is that in October 1943 it was suggested that the Amarsingh College Reading Room might discontinue subscribing for ‘Dawn’ when the period of its present subscription expired…” No further orders, written or oral, for stopping the subscription of “Dawn” for the colleges were passed after the issue of the Press Note and no oral directions were given by the Hon’ble Home Minister to the Principals of Colleges against subscribing to the paper.

[Meanwhile, as reported from Calcutta,] Fines ranging from Rs.2/- to Rs.100/- were imposed by Calcutta Magistrates on January 10th on 22 persons under the Anti-Hoarding and Profiteering Act. The offences included sale of cigarettes, mustard oil, vegetable ghee and shirting at prices higher than the controlled rates, sale of sarees without textile licence, sale of bread without bread coupons, bringing of rice without permits and failure to exhibit price lists and Textile licences.
