Rain rids cities of smog

LAHORE: Good rain in Lahore and other cities on Thursday rid them of hazardous smog, washing plants and trees, making them look greener after so many days.

Rain in Lahore began in the early hours of the day. Though light, it continued throughout the day intermittently. It turned somewhat heavy in the evening, making one breathe clean air after a long time.

The Met department said a westerly wave affecting most parts of the country gave widespread rain, also covering Sindh and Balochistan, giving true colours of winter in the plain areas and intensifying it in the mountainous regions.

Mithi recorded 32mm of rain, Mirpurkhas 7, Shaheed Benazirabad, Thatta 4, Hyderabad, Tandojam 3, Jacobabad, Rohri 1, Quetta 14, Barkhan 9, Kalat 8, Sibbi 6, Dalbandin 3, Turbat, Jiwani 1, Malam Jabba 7, Saidu Sharif 2, Dir 1, Bahawalpur (City 16,), RYK, Sahiwal, Multan 13, Khanewal, Bahawalnagar 11, Kot Addu 10, Okara 9, Khanpur 8, DG Khan 7, Lahore (City 07, Airport 5), Mandi Bahauddin, Hafizabad, Jhelum, Narowal 5, Jhang, Bhakkar, Layyah 4, Gujrat 3, Islamabad 2, Sargodha 2 and Faisalabad (1). The minimum temperature in Skardu and Kalam -6 degrees C, in Bagrote, Gupis -4, Parachinar, Hunza and Astore -3.

The Met department forecast thunderstorm (snowfall over mountain) in districts of north Punjab, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Islamabad, Gilgit-Baltistan and Kashmir in the next 24 hours. Heavy falls are also expected at isolated places in Kashmir.
