Tax on mobile phones

THIS refers to the letter written by a senior citizen (Nov 28) regretting the imposition of tax on cellphones. He recalls that his son sent him a mobile phone worth $500 as a gift but in order to activate it he was asked to pay Rs40,000 as tax.

The undersigned, another senior citizen, is convinced that the imposition of tax on cellphones, brought in personal baggage, has been an effective step taken by the present government to stop khepias from smuggling mobile phones in large numbers.

Friends and relatives should send money, which would be beneficial on two counts. First, it would add to the badly needed remittances from abroad and second, it would enable the person receiving the gift to select a mobile phone to suit their requirement. For less than $500 the senior citizen could have bought a legally imported mobile phone from the market to suit his requirement.
