Semi-finalists decided in tennis event

LAHORE: The Fourth EBM All-Pakistan Open Tennis Championships entered the semi-final stage in all the categories as quarter-finals were decided here at the PLTA courts in Bagh-i-Jinnah here on Wednesday.

Results (quarter-finals):

Men’s singles: Aqeel Khan bt Heera Ashiq 6-1, 6-2; Huzaifa Abdul Rehman bt Ahmed Chaudhry 6-2, 7-5; Mudassar Murtaza bt Yousaf Khalil 6-1, 4-6, 6-1; Muzammil Murtaza bt Muhammad Shoaib 6-0, 6-1.

Ladies’ singles: Ushna Suhail bt Esha Jawad 6-0, 6-0; Sarah Mehboob bt Zara Salman 6-0, 6-0; Sara Mansoor bt Shimza Durrab 6-2, 6-2; Mehak Khokhar bt Noor Malik 6-2, 7-5.

Natalia-Varsha pair win girls doubles title

KARACHI: Natalia Zaman pairing with Varsha Das won the girls doubles title by beating the pair of Zainab Ali Naqvi and Varisha Khan in a thrilling three-set final at the Rotary Club Karachi ATF U-14 Super Series Tennis Championship leg-2 at Creek Club tennis courts.

Nataila and Varsha won the final set at super tie break at the score of 10-5 and clinched the title. Both winner will gain 200 ranking points where as runner up will gain 120 ranking points.

Zainab will face the Varsha in the final of girls singles.

In the boys doubles, the pairs of Asher Mir and Ahmed Nael Qureshi as well as Zain Ehtisham and Nadir Mirza qualified for the final. Asher and Ahmed proved too good for the pair of Yahya & Kashan Tariq and cruised to a 6-0,6-0 win the in the semis. Nadir and Zain beat Syed Raahim Veqar and Ibrahim Noman Yousaf 6-2, 6-1.—Agencies


Shamyl, Ahmed excel at polo event

LAHORE: Adamjee Insurance and Magic River won their respective matches in the Argentine Republic Polo Cup here at the Lahore Polo Club ground on Wednesday.

In the first match, Shah Shamyl Alam’s hat-trick enabled Adamjee Insurance to crush Guard Group/Dascon Construction Company 8½-2. Also for the winners, Kashif Jamal and Shah Qublai Alam scored a brace each while Rafay Sheikh chipped in with a goal. From the losing side, Shahnawaz Ayaz Durrani and Saqib Khan Khakwani struck one each.

Meanwhile, a superb five-goal effort from Ahmed Mawaz Tiwana helped Magic River outclass Platinum Homes 12-3½.

Other scorers for the victors were Ghulam Mustafa Monnoo (four goals), Hassan Agha (two) and Abdul Rehman Monnoo (one).—Sports Reporter


Zacky Farms earn close win

LAHORE: Zacky Farms defeated Artema Medical/Black Horse Paints 10- 9½ in the Annual Cancer Care Hospital Charity Polo Cup 2019 here at the Lahore Polo and Country Club on Wednesday.

From the winning side, Hashim Kamal Agha scored four while Hamza Khan and Bazar Din banged in a two goals each while Captain Umair Ghazi hit one. From the losing side, who had a half-goal handicap, Hamza Mawaz Khan hammered a double hat-trick while Daniyal Sheikh hit two and Ahmed Bilal Riaz one.

In the second eight-chukker match, Master Paints had a half goal edge over Diamond Paints in the first four chukkers, as they were enjoying an 8-7½ lead. Mariano Raigal emerged as top scorer for Master Paints with six goals.—Sports Reporter


CNS Golf from today

ISLAMABAD: The 13th Chief of Naval Staff (CNS) Amateur Golf Championship tees off here at the Margalla Greens golf course on Thursday.

Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, Commander North Commodore Hamid Hussain said the Pakistan Golf Federation-affiliated championship was introduced in 2007 and since then Navy has been hosting this event every year. “The championship consists of four major categories. The main match will be played amongst amateurs over 54 holes during the three days i.e. 18 holes each day from Friday to Sunday. While amateurs with handicap 12 and below will participate in this match,” Commodore Hamid said at the presser.—Sports Reporter


DHACSS College seize cricket title

KARACHI: DHACSS College beat City School Darakshan Campus by five wickets in the under-17 cricket final of the Pakistan School Sports Olympics (PSSO) School-College Games to lift the title here at the Moin Khan Academy on Wednesday.

The City School Darakhshan batted first to score 123 in the stipulated 20 overs with Obaid Faraz top scoring with 32. In reply, the DHACSS college chased the target in 16 overs for the loss of five wickets. Top scorer was Saquib Afridi who scored 44 and captured two wickets to be declared the Man of the Match. Zaid Sajjad of City School Darakhshan was named the best bowler while Saquib was named as best batsman.
