From The Past Pages Of Dawn: 1944: Seventy-five years ago: War-weary China

NEW DELHI: Glimpses of the latest situation in war-time China were given by Dr. Gordon Agnew of the West China Union University, in an address to the Delhi Rotary Club. He declared that after over seven years of suffering and bloodshed, China was now war-weary. There was urgent need of military re-inforcements in the form of tanks, guns and aeroplanes.

Living conditions had become almost intolerable owing to inflation. The cost of coal, for instance, had increased not by 700 per cent but 700 times. The income of professionals was not keeping pace with the rise in incomes of the salaries. But the people had great confidence in both the Chiangs, who had vision, courage and integrity. In spite of the sense of frustration bred by long suffering, China was still looking forward to playing a leading role in the post-war reconstruction of Asia.

[Meanwhile, as reported from Cairo,] Four Arab political societies after a meeting in Cairo today [Nov 19] cabled President Roosevelt asking him now that he has been re-elected to retract his pre-election statements favouring the Jewish settlement in Palestine. The message re-affirmed the Arab policy to spare no money or lives in their struggle against Zionism.
