Canada gifts bulletproof jackets, helmets to police

PESHAWAR: The Canadian government on Tuesday gifted 500 bulletproof jackets and helmets to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police.

According to an official statement, the bulletproof jackets and helmets were handed over by Canadian High Commissioner in Pakistan Ms Wendly Glimour to IG police Dr Naeem Khan at a function held at the Chief Minister’s House here.

The event was organised under the aegis of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crimes (UNODC), where provincial minister for information Shaukat Yousufzai, law minister Sultan Mohammad and other officials also spoke.

The Canadian high commissioner appreciated the efforts Pakistan had made against the menace of terrorism and for restoration of peace.

On the occasion, the information minister said the government was fully determined to maintain peaceful atmosphere in the country and strengthen tourism. He said Pakistan had great potential for religious tourism. He said a comprehensive plan was underway to improve regional economy, adding opening of the Pak-Afghan border round-the-clock was live example of the government’s initiatives to this effect.

The law minister and IGP recalled the sacrifices of law enforcers and public for restoration of peace in Pakistan. They lauded the Canadian government for extending support to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police in different departments.

Meanwhile, Ms Glimour also called on Governor Shah Farman at the Governor’s House and discussed matters of mutual interest.

The governor while talking about the Indian atrocities in the held Kashmir said it was responsibility of the international community to take serious notice of human rights violations in the held valley.

The governor said international investors should exploit the great potential the minerals and tourism sectors in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa had.
