Simon Jones fined for gesturing

BIRMINGHAM, Aug 7: England fast bowler Simon Jones was fined 20 percent of his match fee for gesturing at Matthew Hayden after dismissing the Australia batsman on Saturday during the second Ashes Test at Edgbaston.

The fine, which equates to approximately 1,000 pounds, was imposed by match referee Ranjan Madugalle after Jones was reported by all the umpires, including the off-field officials, for a breach of the International Cricket Council’s code of conduct, the world governing body said in a statement on Sunday.

Jones, who after having Hayden caught at slip by Marcus Trescothick for 31, ran down the pitch and pointed at the batsman, was charged under section 1.6 of the code, “pointing or gesturing towards the pavilion in an aggressive manner by a bowler or other member of the fielding side upon dismissal of a batsman.”

Jones, who pleaded guilty to the charge, was deemed to have committed a level one offence under the code by former Sri Lanka captain Madugalle.—AFP
