Students asked to develop reading habit

KOHAT: Over 26,000 books on various subjects with a discount of 25 per cent were displayed at a book fair held in the Kohat University of Science and Technology.

Students from the private and government colleges were also invited to the fair, many of whom also bought books.

The books on display were donated by the publishers from Peshawar, Lahore and Islamabad.

Two-day book fair held in Kohat varsity

The two-day fair was inaugurated by brigade commander Brig Shehzad, while vice-chancellor Dr Jameel Ahmed, deans and professors of the university also witnessed it. The book fair ended here the other day.

Brig Shehzad also inaugurated the army corner in the university. Speaking on the occasion, he said that the students should develop the habit of reading as getting knowledge side by side academics was essential for their success. He said that book reading broadened knowledge and prepared the students for higher studies.

The VC said that book reading brought about new thinking and was an essential food for the brains.

HASHISH SEIZED: The police at the tunnel toll plaza held a man and his sister while they were trying to smuggle hashish from Khyber district to Tank the other day.

SHO Ayatullah stopped a suspicious car and during checking the police team found 18 kilogrammes of hashish hidden in its secret cavities. They arrested the alleged carriers Ms Tasleem and Niaz Wali, residents of Tank district.

They were presented in the court where the judge sent the girl to prison and handed over the man in police custody on physical remand.

SECURITY PLAN: The district administration here has deployed 3,000 policemen and sought assistance of the army, which will remain on standby, for peaceful observance of Chehlum of Hazrat Imam Hussain.

A statement issued here said that the snipers of FC and police had been stationed on the mountains surrounding Kohat and rooftops of houses and plazas located on the mourners’ routes.

Similarly, Kohat city would remain sealed on Chehlum whereas business activities would remain shut.

CLEANLINESS DRIVE: Staff of tehsil municipal administrations of three tehsils of Kohat district launched a one-week special cleanliness drive the other day.

Hundreds of staff of Lachi, Kohat and Gumbat tehsils lifted garbage from streets and bazaars in tractors and put it at the landfills.

The drive was being supervised by assistant commissioners of respective tehsils who urged the people to throw waste in dustbins and at the dumping sites.
