Philippine example

THE Philippines government has made a new law to alleviate the negative effects of deforestation and foster a green culture among the country’s youth.

The Graduation Legacy for the Environment Act requires all students from primary school to college to plant at least 10 trees before they graduate.

With 17.5 million students graduating each year it will ensure at least 175 million new trees per year. Students are encouraged to plant indigenous species appropriate to their location.

Our education minister, who was also my course mate in a training programme, should consider making efforts for enacting such a law to promote green culture in Pakistan.
