FROM THE PAST PAGES OF DAWN: 1969: Fifty years ago: Call for unity

DACCA: Khan Abdul Wali Khan, President of the National Awami Party, yesterday [Oct 5] called for unity among the people to get their democratic rights established. He said that the country was deprived of a constitution for the last 22 years. ...

He was addressing the workers of the Dacca City National Awami Party here last evening. ... Referring to his visit to various parts of both the wings, Khan Wali Khan said that despite the fact the people of different regions had different languages, “politically we speak the same language”.

He explained that [the] problems of the common people were the same. The people of both the provinces were “equally deprived” of their rights. It was the 23 families of the country who were exploiting the people to perpetuate the rule of exploitation of the people, he charged.

Mr Mahmud Ali Qasuri, President of the West Pakistan NAP, Mr Gaus Bux Bizenjo, General Secretary, West Pakistan NAP, Mr Azizullah, Secretary, Karachi NAP, Dr Ejaz Nazir, a labour leader, and Mr Amirzada Khan, an advocate, also addressed the meeting. The leaders in their speeches described the last mass movement against the Ayub regime as “revolutionary” and called upon the people to remain united for achieving the democratic rights.
