UN apathy

IT is surprising to see that for the last 40 days almost 10 to 15 people have been killed daily by Indian forces and many more are denied medical care, food and medicines for survival.

Yet, the world at large, particularly the United Nations, is exhibiting a casual attitude. The UN is a world body and it needs no invitation. It was duty bound to have forced to entry of UN observers into Kashmir and stopped the killing and genocide. The Secretary-General should have taken prompt action, as they did in east Timor and Sudan. Why has UN not moved as swiftly in Kashmir?

By the time the Kashmir issue comes up for debate at the UN at the end of September, another 150 Kashmiris would have lost their lives.

Either we must have a potent and effective UN, or we say goodbye to the toothless UN.
