Kidnapped student found murdered

GUJRAT: A 23-year-old student was allegedly killed after being kidnapped in Dhoria village of Kharian Saddar police precincts on Wednesday.

Reports said Adeel Ansar had been kidnapped by seven people, including Zafar Iqbal, after they had quarrelled with him over some issue on Tuesday. Kharian police had lodged a case of his kidnapping under section 365 of Pakistan Penal Code on the report of his grandfather Imtiaz Ahmed.

On Wednesday, police found Adeel’s body from the Upper Jhelum canal as he had been killed with the gun shots and then his body was thrown into the canal.

Earlier in the day, some students also staged a protest demonstration in Kharian against the kidnapping incident.

Police have shifted the body to the Kharian THQ hospital for autopsy and started investigation into the case with no arrest so far.

Orientation event: The University of Gujrat (UoG) vice chancellor has underlined the need for the youth to uphold their cultural and moral ethos during their academic journey for shaping a better, brighter future for the country.

Prof Dr Shabbar Atiq was speaking at an orientation ceremony for new students at the Allama Iqbal Hall on Hafiz Hayat Campus.

The ceremony ‘Orientation-2019’ was held in two houseful sessions because of a large number of new admissions in 79 undergraduate and 35 graduate programmes. It was organised by the Student Services Centre (SSC) to provide new students with an insight into the workings of the university, its rules and regulations and other necessary information with regard to their study and stay on campus.

Prof Atiq in his welcome address said the students must devote all their energies towards pursuing their goals.

“I congratulate you all at the threshold of your new academic journey. You should not take this moment for granted and should remain committed to the purpose for which you are here today. The UoG faculty and administration will go all out to facilitate you all along your academic journey,” he said.
