From The Past Pages Of Dawn: 1969: Fifty Years Ago: Investment climate

KARACHI: The Government is examining its various financial policies with a view to correcting them wherever necessary for improving the investment climate in the country, the Finance Minister, Nawab Mozaffar Ali Khan Qizilbash, said in Karachi yesterday [Sept 13].

He told a news conference here that measures were also being taken by the Government to improve private investment in East Pakistan. He said it was regrettable that private investment in that Province was lagging substantially behind the target. He agreed with a correspondent that the proposal of setting up a private investment trust should be given due and sympathetic consideration for improving the investment situation.

Explaining the Government’s policy in respect of broad-basing the industrial ownership, the Finance Minister said that newcomers were being given priority. Big industrialists were not allowed to enter any field where small and medium size businessmen were interested. They were also not being given loans for that purpose.

Replying to a question, he said that he had asked the industrialists to improve their image through sharing of profits and social justice.
