Police save woman from being killed for honour

PESHAWAR: The city police on Saturday saved a woman from being killed for honour on a jirga order and arrested nine people, including five jirga members.

An official said the arrests were made late on Friday when Regi police intercepted a vehicle and arrested four people while transporting the woman to Charsadda to be killed on the orders of a local jirga on charges of having illicit relations with a man, who was murdered in Charsadda on Aug 22.

The official said a jirga had ruled that the woman should be handed over to her husband in Charsadda to be killed for honour.

He said following a tip-off that the woman was being shifted to Charsadda, the police intercepted a vehicle and recovered her and arrested four accused identified as Shah Hussain, Noor Islam, Hazratullah and Fazl Khaliq.

He said five members of the jirga, which had ordered killing of the woman, were also arrested.

They were identified as Abdul Wahab, Noor Wali, Sabz Ali, Muhib Ali and Akbar Hussain.

The official said the female had been shifted to woman police station, while the accused had been booked under relevant sections of law.
