Two killed, five injured in road accident

ISLAMABAD: Two people were killed and five injured in a road accident in the capital on Wednesday.

Police said several vehicles were also damaged in the accident, which took place on the expressway near Kak Bridge.

They said the accident took place when the driver of a truck loaded with wheat heading towards Islamabad lost control of the vehicle near DHA Phase VII. The speed of the truck increased gradually because of the slope of the road, causing it to hit other vehicles in front of it.

The truck covered a distance of more than half a kilometre and hit six vehicles and a van, before crashing into another truck near Kak Bridge and turning over.

Three people – the driver, owner and assistant on the truck – as well as passengers in cars and the van were injured in the accident.

Police and rescue officials took all of the truck passengers and four other victims, including two passengers from the van, who were seriously injured to a hospital.

Truck driver Mehboob Alam and van passenger Khurram Shahzad were pronounced dead at the hospital, police said. The other five victims were admitted to the hospital.

Police said the truck’s tie rod was found to be broken and the accident appears to have taken place because its brakes failed.
