From The Past Pages Of Dawn: 1969: Fifty Years Ago: Destroyer for Iran launched

SOUTHAMPTON: Princess Shams Pahlavi, sister of the Shah of Iran, launched the fourth in a series of fast destroyers built in Britain for the Imperial Iranian Navy yesterday [July 30].

The Princess named the 1,200 ton warship “Farmarz”. Like the previous three, it has a top speed of 40 knots, carries one 4 g inch gun, an antisubmarine mortar, surface-to-surface missiles and a triple Sea cat launcher for anti-aircraft missiles. The ship will have a crew of 125 officers and ratings living in fully air-conditioned quarters. — Agency

[Meanwhile, as reported by another agency in Boston,] Senator Edward Kennedy announced last night [July 30] that he would stand again for the Senate in 1970, implying that he would not seek the Democratic nomination in the 1972 Presidential race.

His announcement ended two weeks of speculation about his political future following his car accident on July 18 in which his female passenger was killed.

A brief declaration from his Boston office said Senator Kennedy would fulfil his Senatorial mandate until it ended in 1970 and then would stand for re-election.
