Teachers protest against feared sacking

HYDERABAD: IBA-test qualified headmasters and headmistresses staged a protest sit-in outside local press club on Sunday in protest against fears of their expected retrenchment.

The protesters’ leaders Faiz Mohammad, Mohammad Shoaib Qureshi and Ms Momina said that Sindh education secretary had announced advertising recruitment of posts after their dismissal. On the one hand their contracts were being extended while on the other announcements were being made about sacking them, they said.

They said that they were suffering from serious mental stress but still they were discharging their responsibilities diligently, which was also appreciated by the Sindh education minister. They said the education minister had announced regularising their services.

The latest notification, however, proved that a decision had been taken to terminate their contracts after one year of service, they said.

They urged Pakistan Peoples Party chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari and Sindh government to take notice of the injustice and threatened that they would launch a regular protest if their jobs were not regularised and the notification in question not withdrawn.

NAWABSHAH: The teachers in Nawabshah also held a similar protest outside the local press club demanding regularisation of services.

The protesters’ leaders said that more than 950 of them were initially appointed on contract for two years. But even after successful completion of the contract, their services were not regularised and their new contract letters were issued only for a period of one year, mentioning that it would not be extended.
