From The Past Pages Of Dawn: 1969: Fifty Years Ago: KMC under fire

KARACHI: The Karachi Municipal Corporation’s administration came under heavy fire for alleged corruption in various departments, neglect of important public welfare projects and failure to provide basic civic amenities to the tax-payers, on the first day of the Municipal budget session yesterday [June 26].

Dr Azhar Qureshy drew the attention of the House towards the hardships faced by the citizens due to acute water shortage.

He also charged that the Municipal administration had failed to provide transport carrier for carrying the dead to the new KMC graveyard on Hub River Road — about 16 miles from the City. He reminded that the administration had promised in the last year’s budget that official transport would be provided on negligible fee for transporting the dead to the new graveyard. But no such arrangement had been made. Nor any provision for the purchase of such a transport carrier had been made in the budget proposals, he added.

Dr Qureshy also lamented the failure of the KMC to honour the commitment made during the last budget session for the setting up of the Major Ziauddin Abbasi Memorial Library and a mosque. He recalled that the brave son of Pakistan died while defending the honour and frontiers of the country. — Correspondent
