Nawaz’s physician seeks govt nod for daily visit to jail

LAHORE: Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s personal physician Dr Adnan Khan has said he is not allowed to see his patient (Mr Sharif) in the Kot Lakhpat Jail to monitor his health on a daily basis despite written request made to the Punjab government.

“Nawaz Sharif requires constant medical care & treatment optimisation for which I have been requesting the government of Punjab, time and again, to kindly allow access to him in Kot Lakhpat Jail for said purpose. The reply and permission is still awaited,” Dr Khan said in a tweet on Monday.

In a letter to the chief secretary, Dr Khan said: “Keeping in view Mr Sharif’s health and the significance of daily and timely monitoring of his life threatening diseases I want to reiterate my request to visit him on daily basis. Mr Sharif is a patient of significant Ischemic Heart Disease, Cardiac Conduction Defects (LBBB/Heart Block), Chronic Kidney Disease (stage 3), Extra-cranial Carotid & Vertebral Artery Disease (Carotid Artery Stenosis), Extra-cardiac Atherosclerotic Vascular Disease (Renal Artery Stenosis/PAD), diabetes mellitus, hypertension and other comorbidities. The monitoring of the aforesaid diseases and his medication specifically Inj. Insulin requires regular dose adjustment.”

He said deprivation of daily routinely visits by his personal physician who in prevalent circumstances was the best acquainted with Mr Sharif’s medical condition was his constitutional right.

“I request that permission is granted to me to visit Mr Sharif on a daily basis and when required to monitor his health and optimise his medication accordingly till such time he is not granted bail by a court.”

Mr Sharif is serving seven-year jail term in Al-Azizia Mills case.
