Matli municipality chief faces no-trust move

BADIN: Matli Municipal Committee chairman Abdul Rauf Nizamani might be unseated after a no-confidence motion against him was declared successful on Monday.

A member from treasury bench in the municipal committee (MC), Ali Nawaz Kashmiri, moved an application duly supported by Haji Mohammad Halepoto as a seconder, submitted to the chief executive officer of Matli, seeking the no-confidence motion against independently-elected chairman Nizamani.

Nizamani became the chairman of Matli MC after majority of voters supported him during an indirect election, defeating Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) candidate Tanzeela Qambrani, presently an MPA.

The mover of the application claimed that the chairman did not carry out any development works within the limits of municipal committee and had failed to address the problems of citizens, thus he had lost confidence of the municipal members.

There was a tug of war even between the treasury benches over the distribution of funds, award of contracts and other administrative issues.

The applicant filed a petition in the high court against the authorities concerned over delay in completion of legal procedure of the no-confidence motion, which was to be completed within 10 days after filing of the application.

On the directives of Sindh High Court, the district returning officer, Badin Deputy Commissioner Dr Abdul Hafeez Sial, along with the officers concerned of the municipal committee, presided over the special session on Monday.

There were 19 people, including the chairman and vice chairman of the municipal committee of Matli. One of them expired while another (Ms Qambrani) resigned and was elected as MPA, leaving 17 members to participate in the motion.

During the completion of legal procedure, the opposition got the required support of 12 councillors out of 17 while the remaining five councillors, including the chairman, chose not to take part in the motion.

The deputy commissioner of Badin submitted the detailed report to the secretary of the Sindh local government department for further legal procedure.
