Karachi races cancelled yet again

KARACHI: The Gymkhana race meeting that was scheduled to take place at the Karachi Racecourse on Saturday has been cancelled following lack of entries, a spokesman for the Karachi race Club (KRC) said on Friday.

“The races have been cancelled for want of competition as less number of horses was entered,” he added.

This is the second successive and third racing week in Ramazan that has been wasted either for lack of competition or scorching heat.

As per past practice, races used to be held in the first three weeks of Ramazan.

According to sources, cancelling races in just one week incurs a heavy loss to the KRC.

The number of turf accountants who are the main source of income of the KRC, have drastically fallen as compared to the yesteryears despite acceding to their requests by staging races on Saturdays instead of Sundays, the sources added.

It is pertinent to mention that couple of turf accountants has requested the KRC hierarchy to conduct the races on Saturdays allowing them to attend the races at Lahore on Sundays.

Meanwhile, according to an announcement, the next Gymkhana race meeting will be held on June 8.
