Surrendered weapons destroyed

PESHAWAR, June 18: Security forces on Monday destroyed heavy and medium weapons and ammunition surrendered by tribesmen in the North and South Waziristan agencies under a ‘buy-back programme’. The Inter-Services Public Relations said the government had started the programme to encourage tribesmen to surrender their weapons and Rs20 million was allocated for the purpose.

The weapons purchased included rocket-propelled grenades, rocket launchers, recoilless rifles, mortars, rocket-launcher systems, Russian light machine guns, large gun tops, air rocket launchers, SPG-9 launchers, single-barrel guns and a large number of spare parts of weapons.

The weapons were smashed using bulldozers and other equipment in South Waziristan.
